Job Description The Senior Manager, Business Development will drive and supervise activities on industrial collaboration project development, technical marketing, technology transfer, commercialization, and start-up establishment for the research outputs and intellectual properties (IP) of ACCESS in the field of design and design automation of scalable chips and systems supporting large-scale AI models and wider spectrum of semiconductor and AI technologies. S/he will be stationed at the Hong Kong Science Park, with occasional business travels when needed.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Executive Director of ACCESS, the key responsibilities of the position include but not limited to:
Establish proactive working relationships with R&D teams and faculty’s research groups to co-develop the technology transfer strategy and roadmap, identify commercialization opportunities, manage the technology portfolio lifecycle, and facilitate collaboration among internal and external stakeholders to translate research outputs into market-ready solutions.
Lead the development of commercialization proposals and business cases based on market analysis, customer insights, technology/IP landscape, competitive analysis, etc., ensuring alignment with ACCESS’s technology roadmap, research outcomes, and operation-level testbeds.
Establish strategic collaborations with local and overseas industrial partners, the public sector, universities and research institutions, open-source communities, and innovation ecosystems to leverage resources and expertise for project advancement.
Manage customer relationships and establish technology transfer agreements and research contracts with private companies and the public sector; coordinate project-specific customer engagements and work closely with internal teams to establish project management frameworks; monitor milestone delivery; and proactively manage risks and stakeholder expectations throughout the contract lifecycle.
Facilitate and coordinate ACCESS’s spin-off programs based on ACCESS technologies from the initial business plan, team formation, and early-stage fund raising through to the launch of the spin-off company.
Develop and execute technical marketing strategies, including the definition of ACCESS' technologies' position in the market, technical benefits and differentiators, business development-relevant marketing materials preparation and presentation, and organizing events/ exhibitions to showcase project achievements and generate qualified connections with commercialization partners.
Design, implement, and optimize internal business development workflows; coordinate ACCESS and HKUST relevant functions if necessary; monitor process compliance, turnaround times, and resource utilization to ensure operational efficiency.
Carry out ad hoc tasks as assigned.
Requirements
Applicants should have an advanced degree, hands on experience in technology management, business development and spilt off related to IC design, design automation, semiconductor, or AI technologies; preferably a Ph.D./DBA with at least 5-year relevant experience, or MPhil/MBA with at least 8-year relevant experience, or equivalent; solid industry experience in handling technology business development, technology commercialization, start-up experience would be advantageous. He/she must be legally permitted to work in Hong Kong. The ideal candidate should have excellent communication skills, a strategic mindset, and the ability to build and maintain strong partnerships.
S/he should have a great sense of responsibility, the ability to multi-task and work independently, and proficiency in written and spoken English and Chinese.
Terms of Appointment
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits including annual leave, medical and dental benefits will be provided.
