Description: The Corporate Controller plays a vital role within the Accounting Department at Norfolk Botanical Garden, overseeing financial accounting and reporting operations. This position assists the Vice President of Finance to ensure the accurate and timely preparation of budgets and financial reports. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented professional with strong analytical and problem-solving skills, extensive experience in accounting, and the ability to interpret financial data to support organizational decision-making. This role requires a commitment to accuracy, efficiency, and collaboration in a dynamic nonprofit environment.
Essential Functions:
GL, Reporting & Budget Operations
Provide leadership and oversight of general ledger activities, ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of financial records in accordance with applicable accounting standards and organizational policies.Perform the month-end close processes, including the preparation and posting of closing journal entries, comprehensive account reconciliations, and timely resolution of discrepancies to ensure accurate and complete financial reporting.Lead the preparation of monthly financial statements, including balance sheets and profit and loss statements, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and appropriate financial classification prior to final approval.Collaborate with the VP of Finance on the development and administration of the organization-wide annual budget, partnering with department leaders to research, analyze, and recommend allocations across departments and expense categories in alignment with strategic priorities and long-term financial sustainability.Prepare and oversee monthly departmental budget reports, analyzing budget-to-actual results and providing financial insights, recommendations, and guidance to support informed decision-making and fiscal accountability.Maintain appropriate financial documentation and records to support accurate reporting, internal controls, audit readiness, and compliance with organizational and regulatory requirements.Prepare for the annual external audit, working closely with the auditors to ensure a smooth and successful audit.Oversee the preparation and submission of annual financial filings and related reporting requirements as assigned.Lead and support accounting-related special projects and organizational initiatives, providing financial expertise and recommendations to advance operational effectiveness and organizational goals as assigned.Manage internal controls and accounting best practices, recommending process improvements to the VP of Finance to gain efficiencies. Accounts Payable ManagementOversee and manage relationships with vendors, ensuring efficient invoice processing and payments via ACH or check.Process vendor payments upon review of approved invoices. Review stale checks and process stop payments or voids as needed.Manage online banking positive pay system. Oversee new vendor credit applications and ensure W-9 compliance, with consistent vendor onboarding.Fixed Asset Management
Maintain detailed records of fixed assets, tracking acquisitions, disposals, and calculating depreciation in accordance with accounting policies.Leadership and SupervisionProvide day-to-day leadership and supervision to the department Accounting Manager in support of the organization’s mission and operational goals. This role is responsible for mentoring staff, fostering collaboration, and ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, analysis and compliance.Assist with Garden-wide special events and other duties as assigned.
Essential Physical Functions:
This position regularly requires the candidate to sit for long periods of time at a desk. This position requires the knowledge of using a computer, printer and copier and communicate via email. This position requires the candidate to travel between various buildings on the Garden campus.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.Minimum of 10+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including financial accounting, reporting, budgeting, and analysis; nonprofit experience preferred.Advanced knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting requirements, internal controls, and accounting best practices.Strong proficiency in general ledger accounting systems and advanced Microsoft Excel skills, with the ability to analyze and interpret financial data.Experience with Blackbaud financial products preferred, but not required.Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to convey financial concepts to non-financial staff and work together across various departments. Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple deadlines, and maintain attention to detail. High level of integrity and discretion in handling sensitive financial information with professionalism.Ability to undertake special projects and/or additional tasks as assigned by supervisor, including preparation of reports as needed.Work as part of a team by cross-training between team members on key essential tasks for maximum benefit and coverage of important functions within the department.Ability to handle stress under pressure and multitask.Ability to be flexible with job demands or the request to complete new tasks, and be open minded to learn new skills.
